Mary S. Hayney, PharmD, MPH
Dr. Mary Hayney is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice, known for her remarkable expertise in vaccine response mechanisms. Her research focuses on the host response to vaccination, particularly on immunosuppressed individuals. Hayney's work delves into protective effects that can be achieved through vaccinations. She actively collaborates with the lung transplant group at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and contributes to clinical practice in this area. She also leads the Hayney Lab, a hub of innovation that explores the intricacies of host vaccination responses. Additionally, Professor Hayney teaches immunology topics, including the immunization course, in the PharmD curriculum.

Karen Kopacek, MS, RPh
Prof. Karen Kopacek is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice and serves as the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. She specializes in pharmacotherapy for various heart conditions and has pioneered the incorporation of pharmacists into outpatient cardiac rehabilitation programs in Wisconsin. Kopacek is dedicated to enhancing patient outcomes through medication education and participates in a post-cardiac recovery clinic where she manages medications for patients diagnosed with heart failure. Kopacek actively participates in the university’s global health program and serves as faculty for two interdisciplinary medical trips to Belize and Guatemala. She is a passionate advocate for student professional development and is dedicated to fostering the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Emma Hickmann, PharmD
Dr. Emma Hickmann holds a teaching faculty role at the School of Pharmacy. She earned her PharmD in 2022 and then completed two years of residency training at the Madison VA with a focus in ambulatory care. Hickmann teaches a variety of topics in the PharmD curriculum including the pharmacist’s role in the healthcare system, patient communication, public health, and pharmacotherapy skills labs. She also supports students in the Rural Health program. Hickmann practices one day a week at Fitchburg Family Pharmacy and Fitchburg Family Clinic where her focus is implementing clinical services in the community setting.
